Analysis Of The Poem The Living Dead - 1479 Words
The Living Dead: An Analysis of Emily Dickinsonââ¬â¢s 1861 version of ââ¬Å"Safe in their Alabaster Chambersââ¬âââ¬Å" Assorted critics commonly believe that Emily Dickinsonââ¬â¢s 1861 version of ââ¬Å"Safe in Their Alabaster Chambersââ¬ââ⬠indicates the speakerââ¬â¢s mood about death and religion. One criticââ¬â¢s view, specifically Brent E. Kinser, coincides with the common perception, and adds that she signifies the inevitability of death in the universe (Kinser 144). In his periodical, ââ¬Å"Dickinsonââ¬â¢s SAFE IN THEIR ALABASTER CHAMBERSâ⬠Kinser claims that Dickinson creates imagery of upward movement from the grave to the living realm to mirror a perpetual ââ¬Å"movement of life and death within the universeâ⬠(Kinser 144). The speaker expresses a social critique that religion and materialism provide a false sense of security, ultimately limiting the way the world is perceived. Furthermore, the poem concludes with the implication that seeking security is a common yet unattainable behavior.
